RamShield® Transition
Providing a Smooth, Snag-Free Connection to Rigid Barriers
RAMSHIELD® Transition
MASH TL3 Compliant Road Safety Barrier.
The RamShield® Transition provides a smooth, snag-free connection between steel guardrail barriers and rigid barriers, such as at bridge parapets. The RamShield® Transition gradually increases stiffness of the safety barrier system reducing the potential for vehicle pocketing.
The RamShield® Transition achieves a controlled redirection of errant vehicles by releasing the thrie-beam guardrail from the post at an optimal load to retain rail height, limit dynamic deflection and to allow the post to collapse without tripping the vehicle.
- MASH TL3 Compliant.
- Narrow system width: 235mm.
- Thrie-beam rail height: 1000mm.
- System length: 5.9m
- Connection to concrete using mechanical anchors.

RamShield® Transition FAQ’s
How does the RamShield® Transition Work?
The RamShield® Transition provides a smooth, snag-free connection between steel guardrail barriers and rigid barriers, such as at bridge parapets. The RamShield® Transition gradually increases stiffness of the system reducing the potential for vehicle pocketing.
What crash tests have been performed with the RamShield® Transition?
The RamShield® Transition has been fully crash tested and evaluated according to the specifications for Test Level 3 (TL3) of the AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH). The MASH specification is an update to and supersedes NCHRP Report 350 for the purposes of evaluating new safety hardware devices.
What is MASH?
The MASH specification is an update to and supersedes NCHRP Report 350 for the purposes of evaluating new safety hardware devices.
MASH presents uniform guidelines for crash testing permanent and temporary highway safety features and recommends evaluation criteria to assess test results.
MASH considers real-life crash data, changes to the vehicle fleet and in-service performance in developing evaluation criteria.
How are the RamShield® Transition posts installed?
The RamShield® Transition posts are driven directly into the ground and do not require concrete. The 1860mm long posts are driven to an approximate depth of 890mm.
What is the post spacing of RamShield® Transition?
The post spacing of the RamShield® Transition gradually decreases prior to connecting the concrete barrier. Please refer to assembly drawings.
What is the system height of the RamShield® Transition?
The system height of RamShield® Transition is 1000mm. The position of the thrie-beam rail will sit approximately 30mm above the top of the posts.
